Create your own artist’s journal with layers and rich textures under the instruction of Jeanne Oliver in this two day workshop held on Kauai’s South shore.
January 24 and 25th, 2026 10-5pm
Lunch included and feel free to gather at 9:30am to connect with fellow artists before we start creating!
ART LESSON DETAILS DESCRIBED BY JEANNE:
I have always been drawn to objects with history and pieces that tell a story. I am fascinated by old closed up buildings, what is behind broken old factory windows, old gardens with creaky gates and walls with layers of plaster and paint.
In this workshop we will gather our supplies and start creating our own story of this place filled with history, beauty and layers. We will explore dyeing, mark making, collage and stitching as we create our book. We will incorporate plaster, encaustic medium and wire as we bring our books and stories to life.
In between our bookmaking we will grab our hand stitched journals that we will make and head to the shore to learn how to create quick thumbnail sketches, contour sketches and abstract impressions of our surroundings.
Techniques Taught
Using plaster gauze to create texture and substrates
Mark making and incorporating it into your work
Stitching on fabric
Magazine altering
Working with vintage ephemera
Mark making on tracing paper
Adding calcium carbonate to your work
Sealing your work with cold wax or encaustic medium
Supplies for the students to bring:
scissors
older work (or photocopies of their work) they would like to incorporate into the book
Vintage papers or magazine pages they like (this is optional)
pencil and mechanical pencil
2-3 paints in their color palette
3-5 paintbrushes in different sizes
1-3 colored pencils (not water soluble)
This is a rare treat to have Jeanne Oliver here from Castlerock, Colorado check out all the beauty she brings to this world with her Artist Bio below.
