Art lesson details described by Jeanne:
I have always been drawn to objects with history and pieces that tell a story. I am fascinated by old closed up buildings, what is behind broken old factory windows, old gardens with creaky gates and walls with layers of plaster and paint.
In this workshop we will gather our supplies and start creating our own story of this place filled with history, beauty and layers. We will explore dyeing, mark making, collage and stitching as we create our book. We will incorporate plaster, encaustic medium and wire as we bring our books and stories to life.
In between our bookmaking we will grab our hand stitched journals that we will make and head to the shore to learn how to create quick thumbnail sketches, contour sketches and abstract impressions of our surroundings.
Techniques Taught
Using plaster gauze to create texture and substrates
Mark making and incorporating it into your work
Stitching on fabric
Magazine altering
Working with vintage ephemera
Mark making on tracing paper
Adding calcium carbonate to your work
Sealing your work with cold wax or encaustic medium
Supplies for the students to bring:
scissors
older work (or photocopies of their work) they would like to incorporate into the book
Vintage papers or magazine pages they like (this is optional)
pencil and mechanical pencil
2-3 paints in their color palette
3-5 paintbrushes in different sizes
1-3 colored pencils (not water soluble)
Guest Artist’s Bio:
Jeanne Oliver grew up in rural Illinois and now resides in Castle Rock, CO. She is inspired by our personal stories, travel, and nature. Jeanne uses art to tell her current stories and also those of growing up among gravel roads, cornfields and early life surrounded by open spaces. Through mark making, layers and mixed media, she hopes to convey that we all have a story to tell.
She speaks and teaches all around the country and abroad. She was told that she needed to find that one thing but she doesn’t like listening to directions so she embraces many loves and that has given her a sweet mash-up of family, art, and travel. Connecting with women and sharing that each of us has been creatively made is one of her passions.
Jeanne is also a best selling author, creator of the online art school jeanneoliver.com with over 70,000 members from around the world, creator of the Creatively Made Business curriculum, and podcaster.

We have designed a retreat for you where you will have time to actually rest! This is not an exploration of all of Kauai’s beaches, tons of shopping, or towns so I recommend you arrive on the island a few days before the retreat to explore the North shore beaches, get your shopping in, take a surf lesson, and get acclimated to the time zone. You can rent a car to easily access all these places since there is not much public transportation here. We are hoping to explore the Na Pali coastline on our boat tour but if the winds shift we might just explore the South side coastline or we might take a tour of botanical gardens. Also, it would be wise to get a hotel room for the evening of January 28, 2026 so you don’t have to sit at the airport waiting for an evening flight. You can arrange to be picked up with Uber, Lyft, or a taxi service to travel between hotels and the Lihue airport for your last day on Kauai.
